During the gear design process, gear root shape is an important parameter. A higher root radius of gears will usually result in lower root stresses. During the manufacturing process, a higher root radius usually means a smaller tip radius of the tool (hobbing, shaping), which affects the wear of the tool and thus the overall manufacturing costs.
